Located in the heart of Brighton, UK , the nightclub Revenge is one of the leading South coast’s gay venues. With an ongoing project of refurbishing the club, Showtec was contacted to design a new lighting system for the Box Bar in the 2nd Floor. The system needed to be something which will make this venue stand out from its competitors, it takes something never seen before in the area.

The first idea we came up with is to get rid of existing dj box from the corner of the room and move it to the middle of the back wall. This way we can create a strong focal point to put the emphasis on the DJ or performer. From this we then designed a LED ceiling which will rise on the wall behind the DJ and run to the ceiling on the Dancefloor, covering a total of 36 square meters. This is then complimented by a series of LED battons mounted on the wall side, which is designed to surround the customer with a moving light.

The first job is to move the dj box in the new position. Our team of engineers and electricians removed the existing fuse board from the dj box, including all cables sound system which will need to re-use. These are then routed under the floor in the new position so the old box can be dismantled. The new dj box was built from scratch and incorporated with a laser cut on the box which is back lit by two LED battons . By building new dj box larger than the existing products, we are allowed space to house the new lighting control system and the driver of the boxes needed for LED systems .

When the DJ box was built in the ceiling construction began. To get the best results, a false ceiling is constructed to compensate for the uneven surface of the existing ceiling. It will also give us a smooth surface made of wood to fix the LEDs. When the false ceiling is finished, the space for the LEDs are marked out and the LED node holding screwed up. It was decided that the LEDs are spaced 100mm apart warp, and besides widthways 200MM. It gave us a higher resolution than standard spacing 200MM we used before, allowing the reproduction of higher quality graphics and visuals.

For the LEDs we decided to use Flex SLX iColour range from Philips Color Kinetics. The units offer a high brightness at a reasonable cost with different spacing options and lenses. By using clear lenses were able to produce a more ‘industrial’ feel to the overall effect. In total, 36 strings of 50 LEDs are used in the 9m x 4m area, giving us the 1800 individually controllable LEDs. The LEDs are driven with 5 Color Kinetics sPDS-480ca driver box mounted on a rack in a new DJ box .

To add to the effect of the ceiling, a series of 1200mm long LED battons is fitted to the sides of the sides to bring the light down the wall effect. By building out the walls, we can make battons sit flush with the wall, creating a smooth finish with no protruding edges. 10 battons is fitted to each side wall, each containing 18 separate LED segments, each with full RGB control .

For control systems, we decided to use a computer based system that runs Ecue Lighting Application Suite . It offered a perfect solution to large numbers of DMX channels that was needed. The ceiling includes the exsiting battons and Martin MX-4 scanners used at the venue of about 6500 DMX addresses. By using the new version 5 of Ecue software , we are able to connect directly to Philips drivers using the box KINet protocol. This enabled us to reduce the amount of output DMX equipment required, keeping costs to a minimum. The computer running Ecue is fitted with two network cards, one to run the network KINet ceiling for the driver, the other to run the network artnet DMX output for devices that run the battons and MX-4S. Butler Ecue two Silvers were used for DMX output, each running two universes. In total, 16 universes of DMX was created to handle all the necessary channels.

To entice customers to the new Refurbished room, we hold two more strings Philips LEDs along the sides of the staircase to create a welcoming effect that gave people a taste of what to expect. By making the transfer of light running up the stairs, customers are encouraged to follow the flow of light to the venue.

Once all the equipment is fitted, the floor was sanded and varnished and new stair nosings are fitted around the club to finish off the installation and give the room a final finishing touch. Two solid programming later, and the finished effect looks stunning! The ceiling and walls give the effect of being surrounded by light, really immersing the customer experience. The dj box provides a new center of attention, emphasizing the importance of the DJ and music played.

Overall, the completed system is truly unique and will create a real buzz in the nightlife of Brighton.
